Weight loss program

There are many weight loss programs available. They can be found in books, via dietitians or weight loss clinics or through the internet. You can even check in at a health spa or farm to lose weight in short periods of time, if you can afford it.

Most weight loss programs have to be paid for even if they are easily downloadable from the internet. However, there are a few which you don’t have to pay for. Whichever weight loss program you decide to follow, do some research on it to see if it will work for you and what are the opinions and reviews of people who have undertaken it, and don’t get taken in by glowing testimonials on the net or on book covers.

Some popular weight loss programs

You must have read or heard about them somewhere or the other. These are the really popular ones: The South Beach Diet, The Atkins Diet, The Pritikin Diet, The Zone Diet, The Negative Calorie Diet, Weight Watchers, The General Motors Diet, Dean Ornish –Eat More Weigh Less, Slim-Fast, Fat Loss 4 Idiots and hundreds of others.

There are many sites which have detailed research on these diets and it would be worth your while to check them out before undertaking one. There are consumer reports as well which tell you the plus and minus points of the diets. In fact, there is so much information, many of it conflicting, available on the internet that you can be swamped with an information overload!

How the best weight programs work

All weight loss program work on a principle of restriction. Either some foods are cut out completely, or some foods are eaten in excess. No diet which will allow you to eat all your favorite foods will work because without restrictions, how can you lose weight?

The quick and fad diets, like the cabbage soup diet (which does not have only cabbage soup) are only meant to be undertaken for short periods of time for rapid weight loss and are not meant for long term use. There is considerable criticism about fad diets, because they promote rapid weight loss, but most of the weight loss is water weight and is quickly put back on once the person is off the diet.

Which is the best weight loss program

The best weight loss program is one which will offer you a wide variety of foods, which will give you the best nutritional values even on a restricted diet and, most important, one which will work for you.

It should be one which encourages slow and steady weight loss – one to two pounds in a week, and should also encourage an exercise program along with a diet. Exercise is important not only for people who want to lose weight, but even for people with normal weight, so that they can keep fit and healthy and minimize potential health risks.

Losing weight effectively

You not only need to lose the extra weight you are carrying around, but also keep it off. You put in a lot of effort to lose the weight and then you just need a little more effort to keep it off.

That is why it is important not to see diet as a short term goal, to be discarded when you have achieved your goal weight. You need to make the right diet and lifestyle choices over a long period of time to get optimum health benefits from your food. It does not mean that you have to be on a diet for your entire life just that if you choose to eat the right foods cooked in the right way, buy healthy foods, avoid high fat foods at least most of the time, you are more likely to keep your weight off.

And you must be conscious and not allow lots of weight to pile up before you decide to go on a diet. If you put on a little weight, make sure you lose it, otherwise a 2-4 pound weight gain can blossom into 20-40 pounds which will be more difficult to get rid of.
