Don’t just be a taxi driver and deliver your kids here and there.  Get involved in their activities by volunteering in an active role.  Don’t just sit in the car and wait for them to be done with practice, volunteer to help run the practices or at least get out of the car, grab your mp3 player and walk a few laps around the field or building.  Getting involved with your kids activities will not only help you achieve your goals of losing weight, but will also help connect you and stay connected to your children.

Each day set aside 30-45 minutes of time just for you and do something during that time unrelated to the kids, work or family.  Ride a bike, read a book, or call an old friend.  Something that is just about you.  If you are starting a weight loss program, then use that time to exercise.  Just be sure everyone else knows that this is time for you and you alone.  Finding time for yourself will allow you to be more focused on the turmoil of the day and not reach for that pack of cookies when you feel it all closing in on you.

When you do plan out the meals, be sure to include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.  Most don’t take any longer to prepare than their canned or frozen counterparts, but are so much better for you.  You set the pattern or habit of what you kids will end up liking to eat when they get older and are off on their own, so start now by showing them that fresh food is the best food.  If you have the time, when your kids say “I’m bored”, show them how to make bread from scratch.  Or show them how to make a fresh fruit and yogurt salad.  Get them interested in how to prepare fresh foods and they will thank you in the long run.  Another benefit is that kids that help prepare a meal are more likely to eat it.

We all end up liking and eating what we had to eat growing up as kids.  And for most of us that was meat and potatoes meals and casseroles.  And while they were good for us then, those same meals have turned into foods that now start from a box or can.  Nothing that has been subjected to extreme heat (anything canned), or dehydrated (anything boxed), or anything processed so much the ingredients read like a science experiment can retain all of its original flavour, texture or nutritional value.  So cook things truly from scratch, you’ll be amazed at the results.
