It’s happened to just about everyone, job loss, loss of a loved one, a hard breakup, financial troubles, something that has upset your normal life so that the only comfort you can find on a daily basis that is always there – is food. And what type of food is available to you when you are feeling low? That’s quick and easy and all around you? Typically it’s the worst food for you. What is available are highly processed foods which usually contain high amounts of sugar, high levels of sodium, and a high percentage fat. Whether you are talking about fast foods, snacks foods or prepared foods, reaching for these types of food under stressful times can make losing weight an almost impossible task.
Many stressful life events can make one feel out of control and that they are just along for the ride. The one thing people have the most control over is what they eat. You make a choice every time you put something in your mouth. The type of food you eat, how much you eat, you make that choice with each mouthful. Many times, since what we eat are the only things we feel control over, we abuse that control and feel we can eat whatever makes us feel better. In reality, the taste sensation may be pleasurable and make us feel better for a few seconds, but everything that happens after that, (weight gain, lack of energy, poor sleeping, health issues, etc.), does not make you feel better and doesn't help at all if you are struggling with losing weight.
The best methods for losing weight under stressful times is to accept what has happened, start eating healthy and start a fitness exercise program.
Accept what has happened
Understand that these events happen to everyone. And that they happen to everyone at different times during their lives. The reaction may be different, whether an individual turns to food, alcohol, drugs, affairs, etc., but the way to get through it is the same. Accept what has happened. Understand that in many cases it is not a personal attack on you (job layoffs, loss of a loved one), but something that is part of this wonderful experience called life. Even if the event is caused by you or directed at you (a breakup, or getting behind in bills), accept it, take responsibility for it and decide to work on how to resolve it rather than let it fester and dominate your life.
Start eating healthy
Don’t reach for that junk food! Eat a bunch of grapes instead. Eat at normal meal times, not when you ‘feel’ like it. Don’t eat a couple hours before you go to bed. Plan out a couple days worth of meals, then go to the store and only buy those foods required for your healthy meals. Go shopping after a meal so you are less inclined to impulse buy. Stay out of fast food places and malls. By staying away from processed foods, you are going to be able to keep losing weight even though you feel the rest of you life is very unstable. Choose what you put in your mouth and how much of it you put in there. You are 100% in control of this! Keep this in check and you will start losing weight!
Start a fitness exercise program
By starting a fitness exercise program, you are going to be able to continue losing weight as well as direct that built up emotional energy away from the events in your life that have you reaching for food as a source of comfort. Be sure to check with your doctor before you start any fitness exercise program and start very slowly and build up as you go along. Losing weight and getting into a better physical condition will be natural secondary effects of releasing any tension by starting a fitness exercise program.
By accepting what has happened and directing that unwanted emotional energy into a fitness exercise program you are going to be able to continue losing weight. Choosing the right foods and the in right amounts will make you feel in control when you have little to no control over other events in your life.
