There are many quick weight loss plans available in books, magazines and on the internet. The thing is that you have to be wary when you have to lose weight fast because a lot of weight lost very quickly can be actually dangerous to health. Many diets may be starvation, fasting or fad diets. If you just want to lose a couple of pounds you may be able to do so quickly, but if you want to get thinner, and keep the weight off, you need to follow a diet plan which will help you in every way and not jeopardize your health.

Losing a little weight fast

Nature cure and ayurveda support fasting. Most religions also have short fasting periods for religious reasons, either complete fasting or partial fasting, or food restrictions for certain periods of time. Many such fasts involve eating at least one meal a day.

Fasting sharpens the mind and enforces discipline. But if you are contemplating fasting, and you are not doing it for religious reasons, you need to be very careful. Fasting shocks the body which is used to food, because when you don’t eat, the body does its best to conserve fat as much as possible, so in the long run fasting is not a good idea.

How to fast

If you are thinking of fasting, it may be good idea to go into it a little slowly and have a juice fast along with one or two light meals a day. In juices, have low calorie juices like unsweetened juices of fresh fruits and vegetables. Tomatoes, carrots, cucumber, melons and other high water-content fruits and vegetables are good for fasting. Ideally add some salt to the juices because your body requires salt. Apart from juices, you can also have herbal teas and light soups. Some people on fasts even take some milk.

Alternatively, undertake a juice fast on the first day, followed a lighter juice fast the following day and then slowly eat light meals at separate times. You must make sure that you are getting in at least 2 liters of liquid a day including water. Before undertaking a fasting diet, please check with your medical practitioner whether it is safe for you to do so.

Aiming for Weight loss

If you are aiming for a couple of pounds of weight loss you can probably do it in a few days. However, it is not a good idea to be fasting or being on a liquid diet for any length of time because it can be bad for health. Your body needs a certain number of calories to function and if you don’t get them your health will suffer.

Of course, the very fact that you put on weight in the first place is because you are eating more calories than the body can use. And weight gain is also injurious to health. So you need to be the right weight for your height and build to look good and be healthy.

Losing weight

Quick weight loss can happen via fasting. But fasting should only be your last resort and should be undertaken under medical supervision. However, fasting can also flush the toxins from your body and help you feel more energetic. Initially it will also succeed in reducing your appetite, so later you will be satisfied with lesser food than you are used to.

If you suffer from any health problem like diabetes, blood pressure, acidity or gastrointestinal problems, headaches or you are already under some medication, then you should not be fasting.

Fast for weight loss

Fasting is serious and meant for quick weight loss for special reasons only. It can also be used if you are on a diet plan and have reached a plateau – you are not losing any more weight as you should be doing. Then you can go a fast to overcome the plateau and it is of great help. Even at that time it should not be undertaken for any long period of time, just a couple of days.

Apart from weight loss, fasting also detoxifies your body. It gives your digestive system some rest, because liquids need less work by the digestive system to be assimilated by the body.
