This has made more people aware of their eating habits and they are more conscious of healthy eating habits now than ever before.

In order to keep healthy, you need to lose weight in a healthy way and not go in for a fad diet. Fad diets may help you lose weight very fast, but may not be healthy for you. If you suddenly change your eating habits, your body reacts by trying to conserve the weight, so eventually you will lose weight even more slowly than before.

Weight Loss Tips

If you are on a diet, but are constantly hungry, you are not going to be able to stick to the diet because you will always be thinking about food. So you need to be able to eat enough to maintain your health. Plus you don’t want to be falling ill while on a weight loss diet. Let us not forget that when you are on a diet to lose weight and especially if you are not eating right, your immunity can go down and you can become susceptible to a host of illnesses.

And if you do fall sick, even it is with just a cough or cold, your weight loss diet can be easily chucked, because you will have a ready excuse. So it is all the more important to eat right and eat healthy while on a weight loss diet.

Foods you should Eat

It is important to know what are the foods you can eat and what are the foods you should avoid to stay healthy on a weight loss diet. There are some simple substitutions you can make to stay healthy. Stay away from refined foods as much as possible. Instead of plain or self-raising flour, use whole meal or whole-wheat flour. Instead of whole milk, use skim or light milk. Substitute sugar with an artificial sweetener only when absolutely required, otherwise avoid sugar altogether.

Where the use of oil is absolutely necessary, try and use healthy oils like olive oil or other cold-pressed oils. Remember some oil is important in a diet, because your body needs the oil to be able to absorb some vitamins.

When using bread, try and get whole-wheat or mixed grain bread, because it is an important source of fiber in the diet and provides more nutrients as well.

Eat more of fruits and vegetables, some of them raw, to get the best nutritive value from your food.

Foods you should not Eat

Avoid all fast foods because they are invariably high in calories from fat.  Fat clogs your arteries and is not conducive to healthy weight loss.

Avoid processed and ready to eat foods which you can eat from cans, bottles or packages. Most of these foods are also high in sodium, besides being full of preservatives which are not healthy at all. Even canned fruits are not as good as fresh ones, especially if they are steeped in sugar syrup.

Avoid red meats, opting for lean meats and white meats like chicken and fish which should be broiled or steamed and not fried.

You should also not snack on nuts which are a calorie dense food; most nuts are a source of oil, so if you do eat nuts, eat just a little or add a sprinkling to salads. The same goes for nut butters – very high in calories and not helpful in weight loss.

How many times a day should you eat?

Many people think that skipping a meal will help them lose weight. Not so. It is ideal to eat many small meals a day for optimum weight loss. You should try and eat at least six small meals a day. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and you should definitely not skip it. If you eat the right foods, you will lose weight in healthy way and stay healthy while doing so.
