Basically you should know that as a rule of the thumb, any food which has a dense structure or is heavy in weight, is invariably going to be high in calories as well. Any food which has a loose structure ought to be lower in calories, though there may be exceptions to these rules.

You can use weight loss information by choosing to eat foods which are less dense in structure and have higher water content. Most vegetables and fruits do not have a very dense structure. To give you an example, vegetables like spinach or cabbage or salad greens have high water content. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams and the like have a dense structure and are higher in calories. The same goes for fruits. Avocados, mangoes and bananas which have a dense structure are higher in calories than water melons, musk melons, citrus fruits, which have a looser structure. This information can help you lose weight. The higher the water content of any food, the lower will be the calorie content of the food. It follows then that if you have more of low calorie foods you will feel fuller and you will be taking in less calories as well. Once you are taking in fewer calories than usual, it stands to reason that you will lose weight.

Once you are using the information to eat the right kind of foods, you will lose weight. But apart from diet you must follow some fitness regime as well. While you can join a gym (or get a personal trainer, for that matter), there are lots of other physical exercises you can do to get fit.
Whether you go in for any fun sport like tennis or badminton or even swimming or do anything in a group or alone, whether you go jogging or power walking, it is important to take up a physical activity which will help you burn up calories and keep you fit. When you are going in for a weight loss plan and also doing some physical activity, you will burn up calories faster and lose weight more quickly.

Whether you are plump, fat or obese, you need to lose the extra weight. Having a higher than normal weight predisposes you to various illnesses, many of them chronic. Apart from that, extra weight also puts greater pressure on the heart and the joints, because the heart has to work harder and the joints have to bear more weight.
For reasons of health and not just for looking good, you need to lose excess weight. If you want to lead a long and healthy life, you need to be fit.
