First of all, the word ‘diet’ has come to mean short term changes to eating habits.  It is the doom of almost anyone who has gone on a diet.  What happens after you stop your diet?  Your eating habits change.  Typically they go back to where they were before and what happens?  You gain all the weight you lost back, plus more.  Numerous studies conducted over the past 20+ years have all confirmed this behavior.  Ask yourself how can I lose weight this way permanently? Carefully read the following weight loss advice.

So you’re asking “How can I lose weight?”  If diets don’t work, pills don’t work, exclusive food (all protein, all melon or all whatever) plans don’t work.  Tracking your food via a point system (or cards) doesn’t work.  Special food plans (prepared delivered meals or canned shakes) don’t work.  What is left?  You’ve tried them all and while they may have given you some positive short term results, they eventually fade away and leave you with the weight back on and you feeling down.

Weight loss advice step 1 – Know yourself

Are you feeling guilty or depressed about something?  Cheated on your taxes or done something else that makes you constantly seek food as a distraction?  At the receiving end of a bad break up or job loss?  Have a heart-to-heart with yourself and, out loud, talk about what is bothering you.  Then, forgive yourself or let it go and move on.  Once your heart and soul are in shape, then you can work on getting your body in shape.

Go back and re-read the First Step.  Without completing this step, you’re just going to end up on the same dieting Merry-Go-Round.  This is the hardest step, being honest with yourself is difficult, but the rewards will be well worth it!

Weight loss advice step 2 – No more diets!

Don’t even think about dieting; rather think about changing your eating habits.  This is a lifestyle change that you want to make.  Plan what you are going to change and change it.  Eat fresh fruits and vegetables instead of frozen dinners.  Drink water instead of soft drink or coffee.  Cook more meals instead of eating out.  Exercise each day instead of watching TV for an hour.  Write down your plan and what you want to change.

Weight loss advice step 3 – Shout it out loud!

In a public forum, announce that you are going to get in shape and change your eating habits.  This could be at a family gathering or on an internet forum.  It doesn’t matter where you do it, just do it!  Then write it down.  Be sure to post it on your mirror or refrigerator so you see and are reminded about it everyday.  Be sure to be specific: “Eat healthy” means very little, instead try: ”Eat 3 servings of fresh fruit a day”

Weight loss advice step 4 – Keep a daily journal

Sounds cliché, but writing down your daily thoughts and activities helps you organize and think about your day.  What went well, what went poorly.  What could you change?  Don’t only write about bad things that might have happened during the day, write about good things as well.  If exercising, keep track of the weather and how you felt.  It helps you clear your head and let’s you put the past behind you and look forward to the next day.  Even better is to start a blog and publicly post your thoughts.  There are lots of free blogs available on the internet.  It doesn’t matter that anyone reads it or not, the potential that someone may read it will help you stay focused and motivated not only on your blog, but on your healthy eating and exercise program.

Be sure to go back to the first step should your plan ever start to fail.  Something is going on inside that isn’t allowing you to be who you want to be on the outside.  How can I lose weight?  Want some weight loss advice?  Look inside yourself, the answers are right there waiting to be found.
