Weight loss surgery is the general name for various surgical procedures through which your digestive system is modified by the surgeon in order to reduce the intake of food.

In more technical terms, in weight loss surgery, known as bariatric surgery, they treat obesity by making modifications to the gastrointestinal tract to limit the intake of nutrients.

This kind of a procedure is usually done by people who have been unable to loose weight through a diet or a weight loss program with exercises. Weight loss surgery usually leads to a great reduction of weight, however, one must also consider that this procedure has certain risks, like side effects, but which even include mortality.

All of these things the patient can and should discuss with one or more of his or her doctors before undertaking weight loss surgery. It is often also a good idea to ask the contact of other patients who have undergone such surgery and have a polite chat about their exeriences and consequences.

Usually, weight loss surgery is considered for people with BMI higher than 40. You can calculate your BMI with the super easy calculator on this site.
